Aspen vs Vail Airports: Which One Fits Your Trip?

Colorado’s two most popular resort airports—Aspen/Pitkin (ASE) and Vail/Eagle (EGE)—look close on a map, but the operational realities are very different. Embraer Executive Jet Charter runs both every week, so here’s how we decide which field is right for your itinerary.

Runways & approaches

• ASE: 7,820 FT elevation, 8,006 FT runway, steep LDA/DME approach with surrounding peaks. Night curfew (2300 LT), IFR-only arrivals after dusk.
• EGE: 6,547 FT elevation, 9,000 FT runway, full ILS/LOC approach, longer operating hours (24/7) and fewer slot constraints.

Aircraft suitability

• Aspiration for Aspen: Light jets (CJ3+, Nextant 400XTi) and midsize (Hawker 800XP, Citation XLS) perform well in winter provided payload is managed. Heavy jets often face weight restrictions on warm afternoons.
• Best for Eagle: Heavy jets (Challenger 300/604, Falcon 2000, GIV-SP) and long-range missions land comfortably thanks to the longer runway and lower elevation.

Ground transfers

• ASE to downtown Aspen: 10 minutes by SUV.
• EGE to Vail/Beaver Creek: 30–35 minutes by SUV; 15 minutes by helicopter to Vail Valley Jet Center helipad.
• Heli swaps: We can fly into EGE on a heavy jet, then helicopter direct to Aspen when ASE visibility drops.

Weather & slots

• ASE: Morning fog and afternoon mountain winds lead to holds/closures. Slots are limited; we request them as soon as your itinerary is confirmed.
• EGE: More tolerant weather windows and Category II ILS reduce diversions. Great backup when ASE goes IFR-only.

Embraer Executive’s recommendation flow

1. Destination first: If your group stays in Aspen core, we’ll aim for ASE and plan alternates. If it’s Beaver Creek or Vail Village, EGE is the default.
2. Cabin size second: More than 7 passengers or large equipment usually pushes us toward EGE.
3. Weather third: We monitor METAR/TAF and coordinate with FAA for reroutes. Jet card members get automatic alerts and helicopter blocks when shifts happen.
